The license key is a block of symbols that must be copied from your mikrotik.com account, or from the email you received, and can then be pasted into the router. You can paste the key anywhere in the terminal or by clicking “Paste Key” in the Winbox License menu. A reboot is required for the key to take effect.

Description
RouterBOARD devices come pre-installed with a RouterOS license, if you purchased a RouterBOARD device you do not need to do anything about the license.
For X86 systems (i.e. PC devices), you must obtain a license key.

The RouterOS licensing scheme is based on the SoftwareID number that is linked to the storage media (HDD, NAND).
